The industry has a demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and data collected by Dr. Grandin has shown a sustained improvement over time in welfare indicators.

Handling and stunning at slaughter plants has greatly improved through the use of numerical scoring.
Properly designed, maintained and operated livestock handling facilities are more humane and more efficient in ensuring a steady uninterrupted flow of livestock to the slaughter line, and will usually pay for themselves by reducing bruises, injuries and lost work time. Down time or lost work time in a large slaughter plant is expensive since a five minute delay can cost over $500 in lost meat
The three slaughter plants with the worst animal welfare records (the Smithfield South Dakota plant, the Tyson Iowa plant, and a JBS USA plant in Worthington, MN) have all indefinitely suspended
The TIF system is limited to 80 plants, which slaughter 22% of the animals processed in Mexico; the remainders are slaughtered in municipal slaughterhouses (50%) and in unsupervised locations (28%) (Signorini 2008).Although the stressful effects of pre-slaughter handling on livestock have been comparatively well studied in some regions of the world, in Latin America and, in particular, Mexico

Handling and transport present some of the most severe stresses that farmed animals are likely to experience. There is growing interest in this subject, for reasons that are economic and related to animal welfare. This is a new edition of the successful book published in 1993, which was favorably reviewed.

This work presents the research on transport systems, restraint methods and facilities for farms and slaughterhouses, and a contribution on animal welfare in developing countries. Handling and stunning at slaughter plants has greatly improved through the use of numerical scoring. The purpose of this paper is to encourage the use of numerical scoring systems at the slaughter plants to assess conditions that compromise welfare that occurred either during transport or on the farm. Handling and transport present some of the most severe stresses that farmed animals are likely to experience. There is growing interest in this subject, for reasons that are economic and related to animal welfare. This is a new edition of the successful book published in 1993, which was favorably reviewed.
