Ejection Fractions of Various Age Ranges of the Elderly “Normal ejection fraction is between 55-70%,” says Waqar Khan, MD, who’s been providing state-of-the-art cardiology services to the Houston area for over 20 years, and is author of “Be Heart Smart: Understand, Treat, and Prevent Coronary Heart Disease.” A normal LVEF reading for adults over 20 years of age is 53 to 73 percent. An LVEF of below 53 percent for women and 52 percent for men is considered low. An RVEF of less than 45 percent is Patients: One hundred seventy-seven men and 395 women, mean age 82+/-8 years, with CHF associated with prior myocardial infarction or hypertension. Measurements and results: Normal LV ejection fraction (> or = 50%) occurred in 66 of 177 men (37%) and in 221 of 395 women (56%) (p<0.0001).

Low ejection fraction, sometimes called low EF, is the term we use to describe your ejection fraction if it falls below 55%. It means your heart isn’t functioning as well as it could. If a diagnostic test indicates that you have low ejection fraction, your doctor will want to thoroughly check you for a heart condition. 5 Introduction Reduced left ventricular (LV) systolic function despite normal LV ejection fraction (LVEF) was reported in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF)1-3 or in hypertension with normal EF4-6, which is a precursor state of HFPEF. Controversy exists concerning the mechanism of normal … Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) affects approximately 50% of patients with clinical heart failure.

There are two types of ejection fraction: left ventricular and right ventricular. The term “ejection fraction” refers to the percentage of blood that’s pumped out of a filled ventricle with each heartbeat. Because the left ventricle is the heart’s main pumping chamber, ejection fraction is usually measured only in the left ventricle (LV).
For an ejection fraction in the range of 50% to 55%, most of the commonly used tests, if carefully performed, are accurate within a few percentage points (e.g. 55% plus or minus 3%).
