quietly captivating experience. Gary Arnold Washington Post Film Review: Dersu Uzala Absent from the screen for two years or more, Akira Kurosawa returns as director of a heartwarming film shot entirely in Eastern Siberia and on interiors in Mosfilm Studios. Dersu Uzala is not just a movie, but is an experience of a lifetime. Dersu Uzala is the only movie that Akira Kurosawa shot in a language other than Japanese. Kurosawa uses his auteurist mastery to bring the memoirs of Russian explorer, Vladimir Arsenyev to life as he inexplicably elevates cinema to new levels of poignancy and pristineness. Dersu Uzala seems to be of few words and mostly actions, and soon gains respect and admiration after an odd introduction to the team- he shoots with a keener than keen eye, he spots tracks, he sets up protection in the harshest of conditions, and is always a step ahead of the pack.

Movies: Dersu Uzala; As Russian soldier Vladimir Arseniev searches for the grave of Dersu Uzala, the Gold tribesman he befriended in the Siberian wilderness in ‘Dersu Urzala’ is a true work of art, a timeless musing on man vs. nature, on an inherent goodness that exists by two people from different worlds. A life-affirming work that came at a key time for a director whose self-confidence was at its lowest ebb, ‘Dersu Urzala’ is cinema at its most vital.

What Kurosawa brings to Arseniev’s memoir is a respect for the integrity of the work and a determination to allow events to happen in their own time. 2010-09-16 · Review: Dersu Uzala. A UK region 2 DVD review of DERSU UZALA (2011 re-release) by Slarek There is a bitter irony to the fact that one of the world's most acclaimed and influential filmmakers finally won an Oscar for Dersu Uzala , a film made in Russia rather than in his home country, following a period in which almost no-one seemed interested in funding his work. He, Dersu Uzala, is the master of his world and the educated people are lost in a sea of forest, an alien world that man is moving further and further from, which is ironic because without the bounty of nature we are nothing and cannot exist. Somebody's doing the wrong drugs. Duke White; 3/30/10 Kurosawa made the acquaintance of Desu Uzala thirty years earlier, when he read Vladimir Arseniev’s account of charting the Russian-Manchurian border in the earlier part of this century. There, the Russian soldier and explorer had met Dersu, the Siberian hunter, man of the tundra.
