Celebrate International Day of the Girl with Malala and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Tune in on October 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. ET Every 12 July is a UN observance called “Malala Day.” The day is based upon the life and struggles of Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan, who advocates for equal access to education for women. What is Malala Day? Born on July 12, 1997 in Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai started advocating for women's rights in education since 2008. Alongside, the young girl was also critical of the Taliban menace in the region that has for decades targeted women's progress. Malala Day, observed this year on 14 July 2014, is not just a day to celebrate Malala Yousafzai. It is a day for all children everywhere to raise their voices and be heard.

She was named after Malalai of Maiwand, a famous poet and a revolutionary woman from Southern Afghanistan. Yesterday Malala Day was celebrated across the world in connection with the 20th birthday of famous female education activist and noble peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai. The United Nations had declared July 12th as Malala Day to commemorate not only young activist's birthday, but also the day she delivered a powerful speech at the UN to call for worldwide access to education. Given my penchant for checking out the national day calendar, I discovered that July 12 is Malala Day. It is her birthday, and incidentally, also the day when she gave her first (now historic) speech at the UN.
